Case Study Overview

Diving operations to inspect degraded area of quay adjacent to dry dock entrance.

Diving/Marine contractor responsible for all health & safety planning and team/equipment support to perform a video, visual and tactile survey of an area of degraded quay. Once surveyed, it was established that emergency remedial works were required in order to prevent the quay from collapse. These works were undertaken in the quickest timescale possible.

At a glance

  • Location: Lowestoft Harbour – Adjacent to dry dock entrance
  • Programme Duration: 1 days inspection including mob/demob – all remedial works completed in approx. 30 days.
  • In-House resources Work: Supply of all diving H&S documentation for diving and surface works, as well as supply of labour, containerised surface supply diving equipment, HIAB lorry c/w man-riding basket together with drilling and welding plant.
  • Sub-contractors Work: Concrete boom pumping, concrete supply, excavator hire & mobile crane contact lifts.
  • Contract: ABP Purchase Order agreement

The Solution

Full surface supply diving equipment with video system, safety/work boat, HIAB lorry c/w man-riding basket for access (from an area of quay established to be stable) to undertake video and tactile inspection of the identified area of quay. Before diving operations took place a low water inspection was undertaken at a suitable distance from the quay to establish it was safe to perform the diving operation. Following the inspection, a short term remedial repair was discussed and agreed with the client and their consulting engineers. Having agreed the remediation approach, the works were implemented – which included installation of steel channel ‘stitching’ (under and above water), underwater & topside shuttering, underwater and topside concrete pour using boom pumps and fender installation.

Initial enquiry was taken at a meeting in the afternoon and mobilisation of team and equipment undertaken for the inspection early the next day. Following the inspection phase, all agreed remedial work was executed in a safe manner and according to the clients requirements. In installing the fender system on the remedial works steel shuttering, recycled materials were used to reduce project cost and environmental Impact.

Value Added
Provision of suitable methodology to achieve the inspection and remedial works, containerised dive system, HIAB c/w man-riding basket for access egress, divers, coded welders, plant operators and office based support for material ordering etc.
